2. Check the Leather on the Outside

You want the outer leather to be strong enough to withstand wear but also nice & flexible. Quality shearling vests will always be made from real sheep or lambskin not cheap synthetic alternatives.

Signs of good leather:

  • it should have a natural grain texture and look smooth to the touch
  • it’s not too shiny and has a natural feel rather than a plastic one
  • no cracking or whatever else would suggest it’s fake
  • and there might be a few tiny variations in the leather that show its real

3. Give Stitching and Construction the Eye Test

  • Reinforced seams at the trouble spots (shoulder seams, bottom hem, that kind of thing)

6. Checking if it's the Real Deal - Inspecting the Interior Backing

Real deal shearling doesn't have some fancy fabric slapped on the back of the leather and wool. The wool should actually be attached directly to the hide.

If you notice:

  • Fabric layers going on (that's a no-go)
  • Glued linings not how it's done
  • Foam padding (that's just extra and potentially not good quality either)

Then it's not a true shearling vest.
